NEW SERIES: Date Night FAILS Part 1

Funny Stories of Date Night Disasters

I love writing to you guys about date night ideas. My hubby and I are pretty passionate about it.  In fact, we’ve actually come up with an entire Audio Resource based on our conference Pursuit of Love that helps Christian Singles navigate dating in this culture.  Read all about that and even get a FREE SESSION here!

Pursuit of Love: An incredible resource for Christian Singles on love, dating, sex and romance

Beyond that, I just love participating in good date night ideas 😀 (And if you’re looking for great Date Night music, look no further.)

But everyone once in a while, because humans are involved, date nights can go a-rye. And because we live in the era of photo-shopped faces, pinterest perfect parties, and instagramming our lunch #foodstagram, I thought ya’ll would appreciate a little candor.

No Small Life

My husband and I have been dating for over 18 years. If you figure about 1date night/week (which is what we aim for) for that amount of time, we’re about to cross the threshold of 1,000 date nights. (please pardon me while I take a moment to feel old.)

Almost 1,000 you guys. So you know what that means?…There’s bound to be a few duds in there somewhere! For your entertainment pleasure, I’m starting a new series entitled, “Date Night Fails!” Over the course of the next little bit, I’ll be sharing some of our most memorable fails with you in an effort to make you laugh AND not take your own relationship or self too seriously.

Date Night Disasters -No Small Life

We all have “Fail” stories we could share, but it’s not the fails that define us, it’s what we do with them. One date night fail, should NEVER be a reason to throw in the proverbial towel. If you keep it in perspective, it can be a chance to laugh (maybe not in the moment, I get it) and an opportunity for a GREAT story in the future. So without further adieu, I give you one such Fail that has turned into a GREAT story.

The Sea Escape, FL.

The Sea Escape did in fact live up to its name. And by that I mean, Chris and I would’ve done anything short of throwing ourselves off the side of that crazy ship to get away from it. The Sea Escape was one of those “dinner cruises” that looks so appealing when its sitting in the rack of “things to do” at the concierge’s desk on vacation.

We were staying in Florida with our best friends, looking for a little “something different” one night.

We found it.

Enter The Sea Escape.

The Sea Escape: Epic Date Night Fail-No Small Life

The Sea Escape boasted an evening of romantic-on-the-water-entertainment, including but not limited to, professional shows, a spa, “game room”, karaoke, live piano music, gourmet buffet and So. Much. More.

We excitedly signed up and assumed that 6 hrs, yep you heard that right, would not be enough time to conquer said Sea Escape.

Welp, 1 hour in, we had picked through the Diner-style food buffet, found the “game” room, which turns out is a floating casino and truly the ONLY reason that all the other passengers were on board the beloved Sea Escape, (#internationalwaters) witnessed EPIC amounts of bad Barry Manilow karaoke, and then…thought we would be safe landing at the “professional show.”

Here’s what you should know about the “professional show” on board the Sea Escape: It’s a movie theatre covered from floor to ceiling in Red Velvet. And the movie…was taped off of ABC Family, we know because it was complete with commercials and the TV logo in the lower left corner. You can’t make this kind of stuff up folks.

Eventually, we sought refuge in the Arcade where we became certifiable experts in gunning down Aliens.

The Sea Escape, E.P.I.C Date Night fail, BUT, awesome story now. See kids, redemption is everywhere 😉

With that in mind, if you’re one who could use some SERIOUS redemption in the date night/romance department…then you’ve GOT  to check out my Hubby’s Free gift to you: The Top 3 Apps for the Romantically Challenged.  Just click here and it’s all yours!

Have you had a Date Night Fail? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below.

And remember, one fail does not a failure make! It’s a reminder that we’re human. So don’t let one minor disaster keep you from pursuing new adventures with the one you love. Sure, you’ll have a few fails here and there, but I guarantee you’ll have plenty of relationship cementing gems along the way as well.

Until next time,

Meg

  1. We once had dinner out with a couple we knew only casually. He was a nice guy. His wife couldn’t stop looking at herself in the mirror. At one point she looked at herself and said “Who is that woman? She must work out.” Nobody said a word. Her poor husband looked embarrassed. Needless to say we never had dinner with that narcissist again. But looking back on it, it was kind of funny.

  2. That is a date night fail! But you now have a hilarious story to tell! I think we have all had that date that just went horribly, horribly wrong! I think for me it was when my now husband decided to get to the movie early and pick out the movie. He picked out 9/11 not knowing that I have serious panic attacks about that whole event (just because of the tragedy not because I was involved). We lasted 10 minutes, went back to my apartment and watched Office Space!

Wow, it sounds like such a romantic adventure…really bad advertising! LOL! Good thing you can laugh together, that would be the only redeeming option for this wasted 6 hours!!

  4. That is a date night fail. The arcade sounds like it could have been fun though. It’s hard to find ‘old school’ arcades most places these days.

  5. Oh, what a disappointing evening. I’m cringing just thinking about it.
On the other hand, it has inspired a really great series! I wish you well!

  6. The title intrigued me so stopped by from My Heartsie Girl link. So very true…it is NOT the fails that define us …unless we live there. Thanks so much.

oh man–how disappointing when you’re excited to try something different and it turns out to be not very fun at all. At least it makes for a good story to tell later! And others can learn from little mistakes like this. haha!

  10. Wow…that date night does sound pretty awful! At least you didn’t have to work to hard to come up with one that would beat it the next time…LOL!

What a bad situation (work, date night, sport) tells me most is about how the person reacts to it. My boss wants to know the good, the bad, and the ugly He won’t yell about the bad & the ugly if he has a head’s up so we can try to fix it. If he gets a call from the Governor that is a surprise, heads will roll.
My husband is a golfing duffer; he says he can tell if a golfing buddy is going to be a friend by the way he golfs: does he “fudge” his numbers? Does he yell and scream and blame others on a bad shot? Is he self-absorbed?
The reason I love my husband (28 years!) is that when something awful (not life-threatening, but like your cruise or a horrible meal or the Pink Flamingo motel with bars in the bathroom windows that was the only vacancy when the American Bar Association was having its national convention in San Francisco but I forgot when we decided to have a spontaneous weekend getaway ) is that he’ll just roll with it and say something like, “let’s not do that again!” or “this is one of those memorable experiences we get to name and laugh about.”

  17. Oh no! How horrible and funny all in one. And here I thought a dinner cruise would be SUCH a good idea 😉
No personal epic date night fails come to mind. Instead ours tend to be of the type where we FINALLY get a babysitter for a night out at the movies (that for once don’t involve cartoons) only to get to the theater and realize there is absolutely nothing we want to see. So we go grocery shopping instead. LOL

I’m co-hosting the #HomeMattersParty Linky Party this month and would love to have you join us. The weekend’s party is still going until midnight, or you the new party starts on Friday.

  20. I love “fail” posts ! Because real life does happen, even to bloggers ! I have the worst luck with “trip fails” I seem to get deathly sick a lot when we plan huge things or spend tons of money… I can’t remember the last vacation we took I wasn’t sick as a dog. Glad I found your blog.
