Why you should paint your Door Teal: A Breezeway Reveal

Transform your interior's with painted doors

Sometimes, you have to do something a little unexpected like go skydiving or order Ahi Tuna at Outback Steakhouse. (I’m looking at you Chris Rea-who totally did this last week!) OR I don’t know, paint one of your interior doors Teal.

I love a home that doesn’t take itself too seriously. A little something unexpected to add a dash of joy into an otherwise über boring space.

Be Original and your Home will speak for itself

Take my breezeway for example.

You know breezeways, that short little stint between your garage and the rest of your house?

Yes, well ours was a yawn fest until recently.

Breezeway Before-No Small Life

When we redid our Kitchen and our Dining Room, it apparently took all of our energy and we didn’t have one iota left to paint our breezeway. So there it stood, faithful and true in all its “Broadway Brown” glory, which sounds much more glamorous than it actually is. I can assure you at no time did I get the sudden urge to break into Les Mis…(other than just the normal amount of course. )

Recently, we FINALLY painted our breezeway the same lovely “Silver Fox” as our kitchen and dining room, but the most exciting part of this little update isn’t the breezeway.

Nope. It’s our interior garage door. Say “hello” to our interior garage door.

Teal Interior Garage Door

He says hello back. Friendly little fella.

I had been wanting a colored door for a while and this seemed like the perfect spot to experiment. To choose the color, I headed to Lowe’s with a, wait for it, a placemat in hand. I know. I’m very high tech and fancy like that. The Gracious Paint Dude at the counter color matched it for me and off I was with my custom little quart.

We cleared out the area, wiped everything down and we were off. And by we, I mean he.

Chris Painting-No Small Life

Juuuust kidding! I’m the official “cutter-inner” at our house. 🙂

And just like that, 2 coats and a few short hours later, we were about ½ way there!  “Oooo-ooo Living on Pra”…nevermind.

Teal Door 1/2 way done

The finishing touches were a rug that I searched high and low for and FINALLY found at Bed Bath and Beyond. High 5’s all around for 20% coupons! Does anyone else keep them in Ziploc bags in their car? You know, “just in case” 😀 My awesome mama-in-law taught me that trick. So smart.

And last but not least, the thing that makes me smile the most about this space, the “hello.” wall decal from Classy Clutter Designs on Etsy. There are oodles of Vinyl wall decals on Etsy, but this font and, for some obscure reason-the fact that it had a period-it got me.

My Helper

Those eyes! Applying was SUPER SIMPLE.  Just place, peal and stick.  I used a credit card to really ensure a good seal and make sure there were no bubbles just like I did for my Entry Way stripes.

As you can tell Gunther is a big big fan.

How to Apply a vinyl decal

Is there a risk you’ve been wanting to take in your home?  Can I tell you something? Do it! You’re life is way to valuable to be bossed around and intimidated by something like Paint Colors  or Wall Decals.  And you know what, if you’re not 100% in love with the end result…paint it again 🙂 To quote one of my favorite bloggers, the Nester:

“Don’t be afraid to ruin something you already hate.”

And trust me, preaching to the choir 😉

Celebrate your life through your home. Make it yours, make it beautiful, but don’t blow your budget. This, seriously, was one of the simplest, cheapest updates we’ve done.  But it’s cheekiness infuses just the right amount of joy into our day as we’re leaving the house.

What’s a simple update YOU can do to help you and yours celebrate life and really live well in your home?

Until next time,

Meg

  6. Breezeway is a new word to add to my vocab – I’ve never heard that before, I’m not sure we have them in the Uk but it’s my new word of the week anyway! I love a splash of colour so this is right up my street, big improvement on the “brown on brown”.

It looks great, that is an awesome color. Our pop of color is a cobalt blue wall that runs through the kitchen and diningroom. I love the excitement and class that blue gives a room. Especially when paired with grey or white. And the “hello” I saw that on pinterest and was thinking about putting it on our front door, not sure I want it that open, love how yours looks!

  13. Hi, Megan ~ I love this redo! And the vinyl “hello” on the door? So cute and creative!! I love your quote about not being afraid to ruin something you all ready hate. I take a lot of risks with color in my house, but for some reason, my risk-taking stops there. I think it’s time to step outside of the box. Thanks for the inspiration! Have an amazing week!

  16. Love it! I recently painted our pantry door navy blue with a dark orange edge. It really just added some fun to the the otherwise boring corner of the kitchen. I have never thought about adding vinyl. That might be really fun, especially for the kids.

That teal door would make me happy, too! I rent, and my house is 100% white–doors, walls, trim. I’d love to get some more temporary color in here!

    • You could always get a colored decal, that could be fun. OR have you ever seen where they “wallpaper” a wall with fabric and spray starch??? Pretty cool.
